Never work for free, because the photographer is just billing the client for an assistant and pocketing the money. And he doesn't give his clients trial days, so why should you? Photographers just want a sucker to do the heavy lifting for free so he doesn't have to pay a 2nd. Assistants have rent too ya know! And often college degrees!

I have to agree with the first comment. Fortunately I came across a photographer who will take me on as an assistant and pay me at the same time starting out. Ya the pay and work aren't steady, the fact that I'm only working one day a week now for 4 hours kinda of sucks, but what you learn definitely helps. And sometimes the photographer will allow you to help him find jobs. Like mine (Barry Chrietzberg: http://www.chrietzbergphoto.com) asked me if I saw anything he could do for a photo shoot let him know. That not only gets him a job, but it gets me a job too.

i interned three months before I was able to make money from photo assisting. the one thing bad about photo assisting is that the money isn't as steady as you would like for it to be. some people i know work for photographers that pay right away. i haven't lucked up on that yet. i worked a month ago and still haven't gotten paid.

so, don't make it your main job unless you know you're getting paid regularly...
