I have a question. Are there any card companies out there--mainstream ones--that still buy rights managed rather than royalty free photos?

Around 10 years ago I sold a photo to Avanti for 3% royalties and an initial fee of a few hundred dollars. I get a check each year of between 1-2 K. Avanti no longer pays royalties and their initial acquisition fee has gone down. I am interested in getting back into selling images for cards, but it is hard to "give it away".

Any ideas? Suggestions?

I have registered my body of work with the US Copywrite Service, you can do that on line. However can and will lift your images if they are of that kind, and your only recouse is Federal Court to have them cease, a very expensive proposition. Most though, seeing you are copywritten, will respect that. See me on Facebook also, or at www.carolrossphotography.com, and best of luck!!

I am a freelance photographer and a writer starting my own line of greeting cards. I have two questions - did anyone who has responded to this srticle obtain a copyright beforehand - I am in the process of doing so and want to be sure that is the correct approach. Also, how many cards do you bring to the retailer in the first "run" - 6 of each card, 3 of each card? I have about 20 different shots I am using. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

good article, but carol ross photos are too vanilla and mediocre to me. probably why they sell (world of mediocrity out there). i would never buy her photo cards. the photo cards i might buy are produced by firstinphoto.com or moussette.com

Fletcher, I get www.colormailer.com to print my cards. They do a lovely job, but a bit slow, like 7-10 days, and you can only add Title + your reference / website inside, I recommend bottom left hand side, 2 lines. They come with lovely coloured, self-stick envelopes, cost about 50p each and I sell them locally and on website for 1.50, so it's quite a good profit, when sold. I guess I have sold 200 or so so far in two months, even sent 2 packs (9 in each pack) to the States recently!

I have made and sold small volumes of cards using an ink jet printer to test the marketability of an image. Take a look here:

The big problem for me as mentioned above is find a cost effective production company in the UK. I know I could sell them, just not for the money I would need to at current estimates.

Great idea, but... For the independent photographer, it is difficult if not nearly impossible to have quality cards printed at a reasonable cost without purchasing an enormous quantity.

I have my own line of greeting cards I sell through my store. I have found that even though I don't yet have the wide distribution I would like, it's very rewarding to get comments from people who see the cards and then realize I am the photographer.
This approach has resulted in many higher-end print sales of various sizes.

Great post though.
